How to take oral semaglutide tablets

Semaglutide tablets only work if they are taken the right way. Very little of the drug is absorbed by mouth, and food, drinks and extra water all reduce it. Here is what the official US prescribing information says for Rybelsus, Ozempic tablets and Wegovy tablets, plus what Health Canada lists. Your prescriber's or pharmacist's instructions come first.

The morning routine, from the labels

StepWhat the labels say
WhenOnce a day, in the morning, on an empty stomach
With whatPlain water only, up to 4 oz (about 120 mL)
HowSwallow whole; do not split, crush, chew or dissolve
Then waitAt least 30 minutes before food, any drink or other oral medicines
How manyNo more than one tablet a day
Missed a daySkip it and take the next tablet the following day
StorageOriginal closed bottle, dry place, 20–25 °C (68–77 °F); short trips to 15–30 °C (59–86 °F) allowed

These rules are the same in the Rybelsus/Ozempic tablets label and the Wegovy label. A practical way to follow them: keep the bottle and a small glass by your bed, take the tablet when you wake up, and start a 30-minute timer before coffee, breakfast or any other pills.

Why the 30 minutes and the small glass of water matter

Semaglutide tablets contain an absorption enhancer called SNAC (salcaprozate sodium), and the drug is absorbed mainly in the stomach. Even so, the US label puts absolute bioavailability at only about 0.4% to 1% for Rybelsus and 1% to 2% for Ozempic tablets, compared with 89% for the Wegovy injection.

The label's clinical pharmacology section explains the rules:

Which semaglutide tablets exist

Product (Novo Nordisk)US approved useUS tablet strengthsListed in Canada's Drug Product Database
RybelsusType 2 diabetes3, 7 and 14 mgYes (3, 7, 14 mg since 2020; 1.5, 4, 9 mg since March 2026)
Ozempic tabletsType 2 diabetes1.5, 4 and 9 mgNot listed (Ozempic is listed only as pens)
Wegovy tabletsWeight reduction and cardiovascular risk reduction1.5, 4, 9 and 25 mgNot listed (Wegovy is listed only as pens)

Strengths are listed so you can recognise your bottle, not as a dosing guide. The US label says Rybelsus and Ozempic tablets are not interchangeable milligram for milligram, even though both are semaglutide, so never swap one for the other without a new prescription. In the US, each strength comes in a bottle of 30 tablets. Canadian status is from Health Canada's Drug Product Database, checked October 27, 2026, where all six Rybelsus strengths show as marketed.

Missed a tablet?

For all three products, the US labels say to skip the missed dose and take the next one the following day. That is different from the weekly injections, which have catch-up windows (see missed GLP-1 dose rules). Do not take two tablets in one day; the labels say no more than one tablet a day.

Other morning medicines

Any other oral medicine has to wait until at least 30 minutes after the semaglutide tablet. This matters most for drugs that are also taken on an empty stomach, such as levothyroxine. The US Wegovy label reports that levothyroxine exposure increased by 33% in a study with the semaglutide tablet and advises monitoring oral medicines taken with it. Ask your prescriber or pharmacist how to time your other pills, and see the GLP-1 drug interactions guide for more.

Storage and travel

Unlike the pens, semaglutide tablets do not go in the fridge. The labels say to store them at 20–25 °C (68–77 °F), with excursions from 15 °C to 30 °C (59–86 °F) permitted, in a dry place. Keep them in the original bottle with the lid closed until you take one, and do not move them to another container or pill organizer, because the bottle protects them from moisture. For the injectable pens, see how to store GLP-1 pens.

Track the routine, not just the dose

With a daily tablet, the details that affect absorption happen every morning. A simple log helps you and your prescriber spot patterns:

Frequently asked questions

How much water can I take my semaglutide tablet with?

Up to 4 ounces (about 120 mL) of plain water. The US labels for Rybelsus, Ozempic tablets and Wegovy tablets all say to use water only, no more than 4 ounces, and not to take the tablet with any other liquid.

How long do I have to wait before breakfast or coffee?

At least 30 minutes after the tablet before you eat, drink anything (including coffee) or take other oral medicines. In the label study, more semaglutide was absorbed with longer waits after the dose, so 30 minutes is a minimum, not a target.

Can I take my thyroid pill or other morning medicines at the same time?

Not at the same time. The labels say to wait at least 30 minutes after the semaglutide tablet before taking other oral medicines. The Wegovy label also reports that levothyroxine exposure rose by 33% in a study with the semaglutide tablet, so ask your prescriber whether your thyroid levels should be checked.

What if I forget my tablet one morning?

The US labels for Rybelsus, Ozempic tablets and Wegovy tablets all say to skip the missed dose and take the next tablet the following day. Do not take two tablets in one day.

Can I split, crush or chew the tablet?

No. The labels say to swallow it whole and not to split, crush, chew or dissolve it in any liquid.

Is the Wegovy pill available in Canada?

As of October 27, 2026, Health Canada's Drug Product Database lists Wegovy only as injectable pens. The oral semaglutide product it lists is Rybelsus, from Novo Nordisk Canada.

Can I keep my tablets in a weekly pill organizer?

The labels say no. Store the tablets in the original closed bottle until you take one, in a dry place, because the bottle protects them from moisture.
